Can an electrical wire be too thick?

The only way a wire is too thick is if it’s too big for your space (the spaces for the wire). Thicker wires provide less resistance, which entails that more electricity can pass through them. With that said, there are still so many questions that homeowners ask when choosing which wires they should buy for their house.

What happens if wire is too thick?

The smaller the wire diameter, the higher the resistance there will be to the flow of energy. When you have high resistance you create heat, which can turn into a fire hazard. If the wire is large then large amount of current flows through circuit.

What is the thickest electrical wire?

0000 AWG gauge wire
4/0 or 0000 AWG gauge wire is the thickest wire used in the standard AWG (ie. Brown & Sharpe wire gauge) system. It is one of the two AWG wires that have a 10+ mm diameter (4/0 AWG wire to mm equals 11.684 mm). The 0000 AWG gauge wire is also the only one with a 100+ mm2 cross-section.

Does it matter what gauge wire I use?

Unfortunately, size does matter. The most basic explanation on why wire gauge matters is because the thinner a wire is (higher gauge) the more resistance there will be to the flow of current. More resistance means more energy loss, which means weaker/less reliable detections.
