Can ants survive without a queen ant?

Worker ants may last weeks or months without a queen. If you want to start an ant farm fast and you want one that will only last for a few weeks or months, all that you will need are some worker ants, without a queen.

Do queen ants mate with worker ants?

Compared to mammals and most other species, ants are a bit odd because they don’t simply have males and females who all mate with each other. Only the queen females can mate; all other females are the worker ants.

Can ants get pregnant?

Instead of repetitive mating, she stores the male’s sperm in a specialized pouch until such time as she opens the pouch and allows sperm to fertilize the eggs she produces. After mating, queen ants and male ants lose their wings. The queen scurries off in search of a site to start her new nest.

What happens if two queen ants meet each other?

Here, two queen ants are locally separated in a nest and accepted by all workers. If they would meet each other though, they would fight to death as they do not tolerate another queen and ultimately, the colony would be monogyn after such a meeting.

Younger ants work inside the nest, taking care of the queen and her brood. Older workers go outside to gather food and defend the nest against enemies. Despite her size and royal title, the queen doesn’t boss the workers around.
