Can bilirubin rise in non hepatic conditions?

NON-HEPATIC CAUSES OF ABNORMALITY Bilirubin levels are usually normal but up to fivefold increases are recognised.

Can high bilirubin mean nothing?

Having a high bilirubin level alone is not a medical emergency, but it could be the sign of a serious, life-threatening illness. People who show symptoms, such as yellowing of the whites of their eyes or a yellowish tint to the skin (jaundice), should see their doctor as soon as possible for an urgent evaluation.

What causes mildly elevated bilirubin?

Gallstones may form if your body is already producing too much bilirubin due to a liver condition or if your liver’s creating too much cholesterol. They can also be a complication of an infection of your bile ducts or from a blood disorder. Bilirubin builds up when your gallbladder’s blocked and can’t drain properly.

What causes overproduction of bilirubin?

An abnormal gene you inherit from your parents causes Gilbert’s syndrome. The gene normally controls an enzyme that helps break down bilirubin in your liver. When you have an ineffective gene, your blood contains excess amounts of bilirubin because your body doesn’t produce enough of the enzyme.

Can you have liver disease with normal bilirubin?

Asymptomatic patients with isolated, mild elevation of either the unconjugated bilirubin or the γ-glutamyltransferase value usually do not have liver disease and generally do not require extensive evaluation.

What is considered mildly elevated bilirubin?

If total bilirubin is mildly elevated (usually <6 mg/dL) and less than 20\% is conjugated (direct: total ratio <0.2), the most likely diagnoses are Gilbert syndrome or hemolysis. Gilbert syndrome affects ~5\% of the population and causes mild hyperbilirubinemia because of impaired UDP-glucuronyltransferase.

Do bilirubin levels fluctuate in adults?

Bilirubin levels can, however, fluctuate in GS and it is possible that they can be within the normal range over a period of time.

Should I worry about high bilirubin?

Lower than normal bilirubin levels are usually not a concern. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage or disease. Higher than normal levels of direct bilirubin in your blood may indicate your liver isn’t clearing bilirubin properly. Elevated levels of indirect bilirubin may indicate other problems.
