Can GAU-8 Avenger destroy a tank?

A GAU-8 can only take out a tank from certain angles. Mainly from the top and rear which are hard to hit when you are engaging it from the ground like another tank would be doing. The GAU-8 isn’t even close to to being as powerful as the main gun on an MBT, nor can it penetrate the frontal armor of one.

Due to the loss of nine helicopters in Grenada, GE started building prototypes of the weapon in both a three-barreled and a six-barreled configuration. The six-barreled version was designed to fire 4,000 rounds per minute, and could be adapted to fire up to 8,000 rounds per minute. The GAU-19 takes 0.4 seconds to reach maximum firing rate.
