Can I install a light fixture without a ground wire?
Yes, if you have a metal light fixture your fixture needs to be grounded. The ground wire exits your junction box, but it is not attached to your junction box.
What happens if you do not connect the ground wire?
If the ground is not connected (bonded) to the neutral, or the system ground is not properly grounded to the Earth, two bad conditions will exist: zero voltage will not have a ground reference, which can lead to irregular and inconvenient voltages that could have a negative effect on equipment, but more importantly.
Does LED retrofit need ground wire?
Nope! Power is power and our LED light products won’t discriminate between grounded and ungrounded power so long as it’s coming through an adapter. So if you’ve grown attached to your lights or your loved ones, then using a grounded outlet is the better option, though it is still your choice to make.
Is a grounding screw necessary?
It is not required to ground the mounting plate. That green screw is only there for convenience of grounding a metal fixture with no separate ground wire. With the two wires you described connected together you are good.
Can I attach ground wire to mounting screw?
Hook the screw loop around the green ground screw on your mounting bracket or light fixture and tighten the screw to hold it in place. If your light fixture has its own green ground wire you will need to connect the two ground wires using a wire nut.
Do LED lights need an earth wire?
No – LED lights do not need or justify different grounding or protection – they carry the same electricity and have the same risks. Actually, more (along with CFL’s) because filament bulbs usually fail by shorting of the filament, which results in an open circuit.
Do LED drivers need to be earthed?
There is no earth connection required for the functionality of the LED Driver. Earth connection is recommended to improve following behaviour.
What is the difference between grounded and grounding?
A grounded wire is required by the National Electrical Code to be white or gray in color on the customer side of the meter. Grounded wires on the utility side of the system do not generally have insulation. A “grounding” wire on the other hand is a safety wire that has intentionally been connected to earth.
What do I do if I don’t have a ground screw?
If there are no ground screw hole available in the box; attach the ground wire to the box using a green ground clip (captures the wire and slips over the edge of the box, holding the ground wire in good contact with the box). Ground screws and clips will be available at big box or good hardware stores.
Where do you put ground wire without ground screw?
If there is a ground wire in the feeder cable, but no ground screw or wire on the fixture. If a fixture strap is used, attach the ground wire to the fixture strap using a green screw or ground clip. If a fixture strap is not used, leave the ground wire folder neatly in the back of the box.
