Can I switch from active duty to reserve while in AIT?

No. When you re-enlist… you can change your status from AD to reserves/guard. The military enlistment contract is binding. You are tied into your AIT as your MOS was negotiated at the table when you went to MEPS.

Can you switch from active duty Army to reserve while in contract?

If by reserves you mean National Guard or Army Reserve, it is possible but not likely. As other have mentioned generally you have to wait for your contract to expire. Transfering from the National Guard or Army Reserve is much easier, just have to have you CO sign off and work with an active army recruiter.

However, to qualify, you must be within a designated time (usually one or two years) from your normal date of separation. Approval is not automatic, and approvals for transfer are based on the needs of the service at the time.
