Can I use my middle name as my first name on my passport?

A middle initial is acceptable on your passport instead of providing the full middle name. However, as a general rule of thumb, you should always enter your name as it appears on the documentation you present to prove your citizenship.

Can you put your preferred name on your passport?

Yes, you can have your old name as a “known as” name on your new U.S. passport. You need to sign the passport application with both names and submit acceptable current evidence of identity in the “known as” name such as a driver’s license in the “known as” name.

Do you have to put your full name on your passport?

Answer: The passport application asks for your first, middle and last name. If you completed the form with your full name, then that is what will appear on the passport. The Secure Flight Program recommends that the name provided when booking your travel matches the government ID that you will use when traveling.

Is initials allowed in passport?

No initials should be written and all initials (if any) in the applicant’s name should be expanded. For instance, for the name used above, writing the Given Name as “P.K. JAIN” or “PIYUSH K JAIN” is not correct. No honorifics, titles such as Major, Doctor etc should be written.
