Can IAS officer be posted anywhere?

The roles and responsibilities of an IAS officer are indeed extremely important. Another important element that one should keep in mind is the fact that it is an all-India transferable job. You can be posted anywhere across the country.

Can IAS be posted as SDM?

At the beginning of their career, IAS officers receive district training with their home cadres followed by their first posting. Their initial role is as a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and they are placed in charge of a district sub-division.

Can IAS get home posting?

Generally, an IAS/IPS officer cannot get his home cadre. However, there is a very slim chance of it. This is possible only if you get a very high rank and then there are vacancies in your home state for your category in that year. In addition, you should have given your first preference as your home state.

How many promotions does it take to become an IAS officer?

If you are under UPPCS, then the starting post will be of SDM that is level-10, and it will take five promotions to be an IAS officer. They have to get promoted to level 11, level 12, level 13, level 13A and level 14. The promotion process is quite slow and it takes 15-20 years to get promoted as an IAS officer.

Can a PCS officer become an IAS officer in Bihar?

In Bihar, if a PCS officer gets promoted to the rank of Joint Secretary, then he is eligible to get promoted as an IAS officer. Due to lack of recommendation, if he is not promoted to IAS rank then he will get a post correspondent to DM. Nonetheless, the post of DM is subjected to IAS officer.

Why are State PCS officers preferred over IAS officers for DM post?

Also the power to give anyone the post of DM rest solely with state govt ie no interference by central govt. State PCS officers are directly under the control of state govt whereas directly recruited IAS officers are under the joint control of central & state govt. So this is one of the reason of giving preference to state PCS officers for DM post.
