Can nuclear subs be tracked?

A U.S. Trident nuclear submarine carries 24 missiles, each fitted with several independently targeted warheads. Tracking each other’s submarines was a major headache for the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Salt water is mostly opaque to electromagnetic radiation, so subs are invisible to radar.

Can a submarine go undetected?

New advanced submarines can stay submerged for weeks or even months and move relatively undetected while on patrol. Many submarines emit less noise than ambient water noise.

Are nuclear submarines hard to detect?

While submarines are likely to become harder to detect with sonar, Bradbury says that if sonar does not identify them, they’ll be picked up by sensors detecting magnetic, nuclear, gravitational and other anomalies. Crucially, it is not just the Americans who are exploring this technology.

How far can submarines detect?

In particular, an average detection range of 5 km will result in the upper limit “corridor” fluctuating from 2-3 to 8-9 km (model A). The tracking submarine will hardly be able to respond adequately to such changes during long periods of weeks and months.

How far can sonar detect submarines?

Sonars that operate at frequencies of 2-10 kHz are used to find and track underwater targets at ranges of tens of kilometers.

Can submarines hide from sonar?

Bubble-filled rubbery coatings may one day help make submarines virtually undetectable to sonar, researchers say. To avoid detection by sonar, military submarines are often covered with sound-absorbing tiles called anechoic coatings. These perforated rubber tiles are typically about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) thick.

How can submarines make themselves less visible to sonar?

How long can a submarine stay under?

The limits on how long they can stay underwater are food and supplies. Submarines generally stock a 90-day supply of food, so they can spend three months underwater. The diesel-powered submarines (not now used by the United States Navy) had a limit of several days submerged.

Can submarines track other submarines?

Submarines equipped with torpedoes became a major factor during the two world wars. About 40 countries operate submarines at present.

How far can passive sonar hear?

These sound waves can travel for hundreds of miles under water, and can retain an intensity of 140 decibels as far as 300 miles from their source.

What is the difference between AIP and nuclear-powered submarines?

The hydraulics in a nuclear reactor produce noise as they pump coolant liquid, while an AIP’s submarine’s engines are virtually silent. Diesel-powered submarines can also approach this level of quietness while running on battery power, but can only do so for a few hours whereas an AIP submarine can keep it up for days.

How quiet are nuclear powered submarines?

Nuclear powered submarines have become very quiet—at least an order of magnitude quieter than a diesel submarine with its engine running.

What are the alternatives to nuclear powered submarines?

Navies who wish to operate non-nuclear subs with long-range and large weapons payload are now option for large diesel submarines equipped with AIP, which provide the closest alternative to nuclear powered submarines.

How much does a nuclear attack submarine cost?

By comparison, AIP-powered submarines have generally cost between $200 and $600 million, meaning a country could easily buy three or four medium-sized AIP submarines instead of one nuclear attack submarine.
