He and about 80 other orangutans in captivity around the country are zoo-bred crosses between two subspecies of orangutans, those originating in Borneo and those from the neighboring island of Sumatra. They are called hybrids, or “cocktail orangutans,” or simply mutts, and they are history.

Can different apes crossbreed?

What is the difference between Borneo and Sumatran orangutans?

Bornean orangutan has wider face and larger throat pouch than Sumatran orangutan. Males have prominent round face due to wide cheek flaps that are covered with short, bristly hairs. Sumatran orangutan is covered with long, orange, woolly fur. Bornean orangutans spend more time on the ground than Sumatran orangutans.

Who would win a gorilla or chimp?

Gorillas aren’t known for their aggression like chimpanzees are but they are far larger, stronger, and possess bigger and better teeth. While the strength of a gorilla isn’t fully known (all sorts of dumb estimates of how strong they are), it’s far more than enough to kill a chimp.

The destruction and degradation of the tropical rain forest, particularly lowland forest, in Borneo and Sumatra is the main reason orangutans are threatened with extinction. Additionally, the illegal animal trade has been a factor in the decline of wild orangutan populations.
