Can people with different sign languages understand each other?
Nope. British Sign Language and American Sign language were invented separately, and they evolved before video was invented so there wasn’t a lot of signed communication between people in distant lands. They have completely different grammar and mostly different signs. BSL and ASL speakers can’t understand each other.
Can ASL and BSL understand each other?
There is no universal sign language. Different sign languages are used in different countries or regions. For example, British Sign Language (BSL) is a different language from ASL, and Americans who know ASL may not understand BSL. Some countries adopt features of ASL in their sign languages.
Is Irish and English sign language the same?
Irish Sign Language is different from all other sign languages such as British Sign Language, American Sign Language etc. Ireland is unique in that we have gender sign language, i.e. Men and Women in Ireland have different sign languages due to being educated in separate schools.
Can different sign language communicate?
Yes. Even though sign languages can vary in mutual intelligibility from being very closely related to being completely unrelated, sign language users are much more equipped to use universal gestures to make each other understood. For example, I remember one time when I met some DeafBlind people from Brazil.

Sign language is a non-verbal language that Deaf persons exclusively count on to connect with their social environment. It is based on visual cues through the hands, eyes, face, mouth, and body.
Can ASL and British Sign Language speakers understand each other?
BSL and ASL speakers can’t understand each other. Auslan (from Australia) is a very distant cousin of Irish Sign Language, which in turn is related to British Sign Language. But an Auslan speaker and a BSL speaker would not easily understand each other.
