How does the Ice Bucket Challenge feel?

The challenge was derided as “slacktivism”—a way for people to feel virtuous without doing much. Critics fretted that the exercise amplified people’s tendency to donate for emotional reasons, rather than after careful evaluation of where money can do the most good.

Why is the Ice Bucket Challenge good?

It turns out, perhaps dumping that ice water over your head a few summers ago did make a big difference. A recent report from independent research firm RTI International found that donations from the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge helped the ALS Association increase its annual funding for research worldwide by 187\%.

Why did the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge start?

The challenge began in 2014 when pro golfer Chris Kennedy challenged his wife’s cousin Jeanette Senerchia, whose husband has ALS. Patient Pat Quinn, of Yonkers, New York, picked up on it and started its spread, but when Frates and his family got involved, the phenomenon exploded on social media.

The Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $115 million for the ALS Association. A chart from the ALS Association shows that $77 million, or 67\%, of the funds were designated to research and another $23 million, or 20\%, were given to patient and community services.
