According to general thumb rule, we will assume a structure of G+1/2 storey/two floor residential building, using standard 9″ thick walls, the best mm bar used for 2 storey/G+1 building, we should use steel bar of 10mm dia for footing, combination of 12mm & 16mm dia of steel bar used for column, 12mm dia of steel bar …

Can we use 12mm dia bar in beams?

As per IS 456:2000, In RCC beam, tension zone and compression zone, flexural member, Horizontal support, minimum diameter of reinforcement bar/ Transverse Bar used is 12mm. All structural engineer recommends 12mm dia bar as minimum diameter of bar for beam.

The depth of concrete in the foundation also matters in the design of the footing. Large bars with higher spacing may be used in lieu of smaller bars with reduced spacing. Diameter of bar generally used in slabs are 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm or more depending upon various factors.

Bars in slab like in slab we generally use 8mm, 10mm , 12mm because load is less as compared to beam , column, footing.

If 10 mm bars is replaced by 8 mm, we require 1.5625 times more no. Suppose if 8 mm bars is replaced by 10 mm, we require 0.64 times of 8 mm dia., i.e, if there are 25 bars of 8 mm, then 25 x 0.64 = 16 bars of 10 mm are required.

There is no specific reason for not using bar of 14,18, 22 mm etc diameter bar. I have mentioned the bars which are available in the market (India).
