Can you gesso regular paper?
You can gesso individual sheets while they are still attached to the block (see video), or you can peel off sheets as you need them. Paper heavier than 140 lb. is also good, but will likely cost more. Note: When gessoed, sheets that are 8″ x 10″ or smaller will usually dry entirely flat.
Can you use normal paper for oil painting?
The best paper for longevity is all-cotton or cotton & linen rag paper, which is essentially the same material used to make artist canvas. 140 lb/300 gsm watercolour paper works well as it is heavy enough to take the weight of layers of primer and will not easily cockle from the moisture in the sizing.

Can acrylic painting be done on normal paper?
As long as you’ve chosen a high quality, acid-free paper, you can paint acrylic directly onto the surface of the paper and be assured that your painting will be of archival quality. When painting with acrylic you do not need to prime the paper first since the paint, a plastic polymer, will not damage the paper.
Is gesso necessary for acrylic painting?
A common question regarding acrylic painting is if you need to use a gesso primer. Technically, you don’t. It provides you with a nice, slightly more absorbent surface to work on, especially if your working on board or raw canvas, but for a pre-primed canvas it’s unnecessary.
What happens if you don’t use gesso?
Gesso prepares (or “primes”) the surface for painting, making the surface slightly textured and ready to accept acrylic paint. Without gesso, the paint would soak into the weave of the canvas. The beauty of gesso is that you can apply it to nearly any surface, and then you can paint on that surface with acrylic paint.
What can I use instead of gesso?
In short, the best alternatives for gesso are either commercial acrylic primers or Clear Gesso. It is also possible to paint directly on the surface without any primer or, if a cheap alternative to gesso is needed, then gesso can be easily made at home with ingredients that can be bought almost anywhere.
Can you oil paint without gesso?
You can prime a canvas with acrylic mediums, clear gesso, or rabbit skin glue. Oil paints require a primer to protect the canvas from the linseed oil found in oil paints. Below are a variety of alternatives that you can use instead of gesso, they each have their own advantages.

How do you make gesso?
First, mix the cornstarch and baking soda together, breaking up any lumps in the mixture. Then, mix in your glue and acrylic paint. Finally, add water a little bit at a time until you have the right consistency. For a thicker “texture paste”, add less water.
Do you need special paper for acrylic paint?
You can use other types of paper, like watercolor paper, but you’ll need to use a very thick paper, otherwise the acrylics will bleed through to the other side and/or the paper will buckle and warp. Hot Press paper will be the smoothest, so that is the one I would recommend for painting with acrylics.
