Can you hear a space ship in space?

No, you cannot hear any sounds in near-empty regions of space. Sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in a medium (such as air or water). In space, where there is no air, sound has no way to travel.

Is it quiet on the space station?

Although sound does not travel in the vacuum of space, the inside of the International Space Station (ISS) is quite noisy. There are many pumps and fans that allow people to live on the ISS. They control the station’s heat, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels.

Can you hear yourself scream in space?

So, Alien has it right; while it’s not strictly true that sound waves can’t travel through space, it is true that humans would not be able to hear those sounds. How does sound work in the space station?

On the International Space Station, air circulation fans and fluid coolant pumps produce a constant level of background white noise, despite sound mufflers and insulation built into the equipment to keep it as quiet as possible. Over time this noise can affect an astronaut’s hearing.

Has NASA lost a man in space?

A total of 18 people have lost their lives either while in space or in preparation for a space mission, in four separate incidents. All seven crew members died, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher from New Hampshire selected on a special NASA programme to bring civilians into space.

Will a body decay in space?

If you do die in space, your body will not decompose in the normal way, since there is no oxygen. If you were near a source of heat, your body would mummify; if you were not, it would freeze. If your body was sealed in a space suit, it would decompose, but only for as long as the oxygen lasted.

Can you play music in space?

First things first, it is possible. As there is air on a spacecraft, musical instruments should still work. However, it might not work if you try to play outside of a shuttle or space station. On a violin or guitar, the strings would vibrate without producing a sound.

Is it possible to hear ships in space?

We often “hear” ships in movies going into “warp” or FTL drive, when, if we were outside a ship in space, we wouldn’t hear a thing. People INSIDE the ship might hear something, but that’s not the same as hearing sounds in the vacuum of space.

Why is there no sound in space?

They say that there is no sound in space and that it is because there is no air in space. For instance if someone were talking to you, you couldn’t hear what they were saying. Answer by Lynn: You’re right that there are gases in space, and it’s true that these gasses can propagate sound waves just like Earth’s air allows sound to travel.

Why don’t ships in Star Wars use thrusters for sound?

In one of the many, many shows that covered scientific inadequecies in Star Wars, it was explained that because the engines used ions, and space is not truly empty, the sound was transmitted through the little gas that was there. I guess this could explain why few ships actually used thrusters to change attitude in space also.

Michael Straczynski (you know you’re a fan if you can type that name without thinking) was preparing for production on Babylon 5, he and his crew sent out questionnaires to many scientists about such issues.
