Can you learn BJJ and Judo at the same time?

BJJ and Judo come from the same martial art but they have very different rules, and use different techniques with Judo focussing more on takedowns and BJJ the ground game. They both can be trained together and work well with each other as all the techniques you learn in Judo can be used in BJJ.

Which is easier to learn Judo or BJJ?

Judo is relatively more difficult because it involves more traditional grabs, holds, locks, drops and throws. Unlike BJJ, which is an evolved martial art, Judo still maintains many of the traditions of JJJ, which may make it confusing to learn for some.

Judo and BJJ share many similar techniques, such as joint locks, chokeholds, and throws. Meanwhile, the BJJ strategy is focused more on the ground. Since 90\% of BJJ matches are on the ground or end up on the ground, your focus is mainly on submissions and ground techniques.

Brazilian Jui-Jitsu is harder and takes longer to learn. As with traditional Jiu-Jitsu, it takes about 10 years to earn a black belt. But after 10 years of dedicated practice, the BJJ practitioner will undoubtedly have more skill than a Judo practitioner after 6 years. But both are challenging martial arts to master.

A great way for BJJ and Judo players to improve their groundwork is to practise techniques from a throwing position and then transition into ground work from there. It is surprising how many different opportunities occur for transition into ground work when opponents are actually trying to throw each other.

Why is judo so different to other martial arts?

In Judo we are not rewarded for moving through the positions, we are only rewarded for dominance on the ground, be it holding a position past the legs or gaining a tap out. So in essence Judo completely bypasses the need for an overly complex guard passing game in favour of using throws to land in a position of dominance.

Is judo a ground or newaza sport?

Judo is a sport that can come across as having a very limited ground or Newaza game. This most certainly is not the case, however as in anything the rules of Judo have dictated how tactics and techniques have evolved.
