Can you live off base as a single soldier?

Q: Can a single soldier live off base? Short answer. Yes, single U.S. military personnel ( enlisted, NCOs, officers) can live off base. They may need their commander’s permission & a Statement of Non-Availability to live off base instead of living in base barracks or bachelor quarters.

Can a single soldier move out of the barracks?

If you are single (no dependents) you can leave the barracks when you make the rank of Staff Sergeant(E-6). If you are married rank does not matter, most units require you to be at least an NCO (E5 or higher) in order to live out of the barracks.

Do soldiers have to sleep in the barracks?

The command can not force a Soldier to sleep in the barracks. Basically, any duties a Soldier who does sleep and actually reside in the barracks are required to do, a Soldier who is assigned a room and chooses to sleep elsewhere, is still required to perform the same duties.

Do officers have to stay in barracks?

Generally no. The only place where they live in bachelor officer’s quarters is on training bases. These are efficiency apartments not barracks with 20 troops to a room. However, during mobilization or deployment they may sleep on bunks or cots in open bays or tents.

While there are high expectations for cleanliness and some restrictions, barracks living can be similar to apartment or dorm living, allowing service members quiet space to decompress, hang out with others, play videogames, and more.

Military family emergency leave is absolutely available for family emergencies. Unfortunately, the Department of Defense does not consider giving birth to be an emergency unless your life or the life of the baby is suddenly in danger.
