In most cases, a 30-minute layover for domestic flights and an hour for international flights is considered a minimum, or short, layover.

Thirty-five minutes is a very brief connection time. Boarding for most flights can be 45-60 mins in advance and the 35 mins you have is wheels down and not necessarily the time inside the terminal.

45 minutes is enough time if your flight is on time. I’ve done that connection many times through Atlanta, but it doesn’t leave much margin of error.

Is 45 minute layover enough?

As a rule of thumb, on domestic routes, you need a minimum of 45 minutes between flights. That’s because you don’t have to go through security, customs, and immigration. Give yourself even more time if you’ve checked a bag that needs to be rechecked post-customs.

One hour is barely enough time for a connection at ATL. Your outbound flight will be boarding before you are off the plane on your inbound.

The short answer (based on my own personal experience) is that the minimum connection time for domestic flights in Atlanta is 35 minutes. It doesn’t matter what terminal you arrive at and what terminal you’re departing from. 35 minutes is doable. Anything less than that, not so much.

A design so efficient that it inspired the layout of the Denver International Airport (and yes, 1 hour layovers are ok in Denver too). All terminals and concourses are connected via both an underground walkway and a very efficient train system.

How hard is it to fly internationally from Atlanta?

Generally speaking, flying internationally into and out of Atlanta is relatively easy. The very first international flight of my life (to Madrid on a Delta L-1011) was from ATL, and even as a total newbie, it was a piece of cake. You’ll need about 45 minutes for connecting to international flights due to the need of being on board sooner.
