Can you short stocks in aftermarket?

Yes, you can short-sell via After Market Orders (AMO). However, you can only do so for the intraday equities, futures & options. You can’t sell in the delivery segment as you would have to borrow stocks from someone and sell it.

At what price Amo order is executed?

Using the previous example, if it is a buy order and is placed at +/-5\% and the share price opens at Rs. 105 on Tuesday, your order is executed at Rs. 105. After Market Orders can also be placed through the Call & Trade facility.

How are amo executed?

Your AMO order is executed on the next trading day of the stock exchange. AMO orders placed when market is closed will be sent to the exchange next day morning before the market opens. Hence it can be modified or cancelled in case you sense any negative news or event that has taken place over night.

Is short selling only for intraday?

Shorting in the spot market has one restriction – it strictly has to be done on an intraday basis. Meaning you can initiate the short trade anytime during the day, but you will have to buy back the shares (square off) by end of the day before the market closes.

There is no guarantee of being able to sell at the open price. You can place an AMO market order that will be sent to the pre-open session. If the order isn’t filled, it’ll be carried into the regular market time (9.15) and converted to a market order. You can do this using the SL order type.
