Can you swap bcm from car to car?

Hi Andrew. Unfortunately, any control module needs to be flashed or reprogrammed to link to the sensors and monitors of an individual vehicle in order for them to work correctly. This needs to be completed by a dealer or some automotive specialists, as they control security codes to reprogram these systems.

What happens if you swap an ECU?

Replacement ECU You can replace your damaged or broken component with a reprogrammed and re-flashed engine computer. If you swap out your existing damaged ECU for the newly programmed one yourself then you will not have to pay for labor.

Can a second hand ECU be reprogrammed?

A used ECU would have to be programmed to your vehicle, depending on make and model it can be as simple as using a diagnostic tool to program it or a lot of times it can involve swapping the contents of the internal memory from the old ECU to the new one which isn’t a job for the average garage.

Does the ECM have to match the engine?

In general, yes. All ECUs will need to have software intended to run the engine it is connected to. In addition, many newer cars (approximately 2008 or newer) use a CAN bus system where each component (like the ECM, BCM, PCM, etc) all need to be programmed to the VIN number of the car to work properly.

Does a BCM need to be reprogrammed?

Does the replacement BCM need programming? Most BCMs need to be programmed by the remanufacturer or a shop equipped with the proper tools. If the replacement BCM needs programming, it must be programmed with the latest operating software and vehicle calibrations.

Can I put a different engine in my car?

You can either swap another engine that’s designed to work in the car you have, or you can swap in one that’s totally different. As you might imagine, swapping in a completely new engine is way more difficult than putting in a manufacturer approved alternate engine.

A bad ECM may lead to a vehicle that won’t or is difficult to start. If the ECM fails completely, it will leave the vehicle without engine management control, and will not start or run as a result. The engine may still crank, but it will not be able to start without the vital inputs from the computer.
