Can you take GCSEs outside of school?
Absolutely anyone can sit GCSEs. However, if you’re not prepared, you’re not likely to do very well on the exams. GCSEs have no formal entry requirements and no educational pre-requisites. You don’t need to be attending secondary school to take formal GCSE exams at a college or a school.
Can anyone take a GCSE?
GCSEs are the main qualification taken by 14 to 16-year-olds, but are available to anyone of any age. You can take GCSEs in a wide range of academic and ‘applied’ or work-related subjects at school or your local Further Education (FE) college.

No. Many home educated students in the UK do take GCSEs, either studying at home or via a correspondence course, but there’s no requirement at all. GCSEs are a useful indication of achievement when applying for jobs or colleges, but they’re not always essential; it depends what the student wants to do in the future.
