Can you write the ZIP code before the city?

Write the recipient’s name on the first line. Write the street address or post office (P.O.) box number on the second line. Write the city, state, and ZIP code on the third.

Does the ZIP code matter when shipping?

Writing the wrong ZIP Code with the right address usually causes the letter to be delivered about a day later than if the ZIPCode were correct. As long as the mailing address is correct, the letter will be delivered.

How do you write a US postal address?

The address you are mailing to should be written as follows:

  1. Recipient’s name.
  2. Business’s name (if applicable)
  3. Street address (with apartment or suite number)

It’s always better to place the zip code AFTER the state where the letter or parcel is to be sent so that it is not mistaken for being part of the address. Failure to do this may result in the letter or parcel getting lost or being returned to its sender.

You can request that the destination Post Office hold the item for you or have it returned to sender. If the actual postage is greater than estimated, any additional postage will be charged accordingly. Your shipment will be redirected to the original sender or held at the local Post Office for pickup.
