Did Sony invent Blu-ray?

The BD format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures. Sony unveiled the first Blu-ray Disc prototypes in October 2000, and the first prototype player was released in Japan in April 2003.

Sony at one time owned the logo and does not even own that anymore, but like CD, DVD and SACD, it was developed with Philips and other member of the “Blu-ray Disc Association” and contributing to the development of the format: Matsushita, Pioneer, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung and so on.

Backward compatibility. Blu-ray was a mess of royalties and needed a high-performance CPU to run its Java based framework. Sony developed their specification so everyone would pay them royalties. Every player, every disc (including blanks) was sending royalty money back to Sony. It was a dick move.
