Do AAA studios use Blender?

Adoption into AAA studios will be slow. But adoption into AAA studios is not completely out of the question. In July 2019 it was announced that Ubisoft would join Blender’s development fund and that the Ubisoft Animation Studio would use Blender for their productions.

Why isn’t Blender used more in the gaming industry?

Also because they are used for so long a lot of studios have build their entire infrastructure around that program and depending on size even build in house tools (or even bought plugins like proper fluid/gas simulations which blender still lacks.)

Do you think blender will ever pay for itself?

Blender only needs one or two more killer features, for example Eevee, and it will probably start to pay for itself (ie. in terms of the time you have to expend on it to learn it, train others etc) and I can see it being integrated into more and more commercial pipelines then IMHO.
