A lead-acid battery must be vented due to the chemical reaction taking place within it. Some battery vents are prominent, and others not, but they all are vented.

For flooded, lead-acid, and AGM batteries, proper ventilation prevents the buildup of hydrogen gas, keeping the air around your battery and your vehicle fresh, clean, and breathable. Ventilation also helps prevent battery damage and, more importantly, explosions.
