Do all military branches require swimming?

As with all branches of the military, you have to have a high school diploma and pass a physical medical exam. You don’t have to swim to join the Army, except for specific jobs.

Do you have to be able to swim in the army?

The answer is no—-soldiers are not required to have any proficiency with swimming. Besides there being no swimming training requirement in basic training or One Station Unit Training (the 14 or so weeks of training required of infantry recruits), I personally knew several soldiers that could not swim.

Is swimming required in the Air Force?

Both require a swim, run, pullups, pushups, and situps, but in different order / rest periods, standards, and the Air Force uses 500m as a distance and the Navy uses 500yds. Make sure you know what the length of the pool is measured in as you may not be able to swim 10 laps to get your test completed.

Can you join the Navy without being able to swim?

Whether you’re a skilled swimmer or have never swum a stroke, you’re welcome in the Navy. Many Sailors join the Navy without knowing how to swim, but instructors at boot camp are trained to teach you everything you’ll need to know before the test.

Do you swim in Navy boot camp?

Everyone who enters the U.S. Navy must pass a Navy Third Class Swim Test. The Navy does offer remedial swim training to those not accustomed to swimming, but this is often during any “free” time the recruit or student may have.

Do you have to swim in the Marines?

The Marine Corps and Navy take similar approaches to swimming requirements. Both services require a basic swimming competency for all recruits at entry-level training. For Marine recruits, the minimum requirement is call water survival basic.

How long is the Navy swim test?

The stroke is very efficient when in the ocean, wearing fins or carrying gear when surface swimming for miles. It is also efficient without fins when used as part of the Navy physical screening test (500-yard swim, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and 1.5-mile run).

Can I join the military if I can’t swim?

Yes! You can join as a non-swimmer, as there is no test of swimming carried out. However, once you join any of the Academy’s, passing swimming will be mandatory. If you do not pass, you may be relegated or worst thrown out of the Academy.

Can you swim in the Navy or the Coast Guard?

However, in the Navy and Coast Guard the swim test is part of the physical testing members receive bi-annually, usually a 500m or 12:00 swim test. You might be able to slip through as Army, but most likely not. The navy and coast guard is far different.

What happens if you don’t have swimming qualifications in the Marines?

Marines in those MOS’s who don’t have those qualifications out of boot camp, which will be most of them, will have to continue their swimming training while in MOS school, and they must meet the minimum standards of those levels to graduate with their MOS. If they fail, they must get remedial training until they can do it.

Do you have to pass a swim test to join the Navy?

All of them must pass swim tests at a certain level. In fact, higher levels of swimming ability is required for advancing through the Navy. Before you complete U.S. Navy basic training, you must qualify as a Third-Class Swimmer.
