Do ATMs check the name on the check?

When you make a deposit at an ATM, your deposit is provisional. When the machine gets serviced, the bank will look at the name on the check and verify that it matches the name on the account. If it does not, you will lose the money that you “deposited.” If you lost your paycheck, you need to tell your employer.

Can someone cash a check that’s not in their name?

Blank endorsement: A blank endorsement is made by signing your name on the back of the check. You must sign it exactly the way it appears on the “Pay to the Order of” line. Anyone can cash or deposit a check with a blank endorsement, even if the check is not written to him or her.

Do banks check names on checks?

Legally, there is no requirement that a check have the name of the maker, as long as the bank can identify the account. You may run into problems trying to use checks with merchants, when the name does not match that on your ID. In my experience, checks with “Phil” on them are accepted even though my ID says “Philip”.
