Do BCG consultants travel internationally?

It depends on your location and your role / specialization. I worked with McKinsey’s Knowledge Center in India as part of a specialized team. We were staffed on projects around the world. I have travelled to the US, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Bahrain, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia on projects.

Do Bain associate consultants travel?

One of the things I love about Bain is the balanced travel model. Our regional staffing model means that most of the clients I serve are in the Northeast. While there are absolutely times that I need to travel each week, it varies based on the client and project needs.

Do consultants travel around the world?

Yes, consultants travel all the time, and no, it’s not glamorous. Of course, most firms try to accommodate special circumstances, but travel is still a major part of the job description. You’ll find ways to make it fun, though.

Travel and working hours vary significantly among offices. Travel is most prevalent in the US, where consultants often criss-cross the country. Working hours are the longest in Southern Europe, Asia and Latin America. So make sure to speak with the current consultants at the firm and office where you’re applying.

How international is BCG?

Short version: BCG offers plenty of international assignments, but the firm is not that great for international mobility. Bain, LEK and Roland Berger are leading from that perspective, but even for them, international mobility is not that big.

How often do Bain consultants travel?

Most projects are staffed with teams of people from the same office. This means you only need to be on-site for interaction with the client. Like the others, the client could be anywhere, but you can meet with your team face-to-face in your home office. Travel is often only 2-3 days/week.

If you go into consulting, you should expect to travel at most firms, but the level of travel will vary by firm and by project. The amount of travel tends to be drive by the firm’s staffing model. Typically, travel is Monday – Thursday at most of the major firms, with Friday being back in your home office.

How often do consultants travel internationally?

You are typically at the client site Monday-Thursday every week, so that’s roughly 16 days out of every month that you are away from home. You typically fly on Mondays and Thursdays for this, so there’s usually only 8 “travel days” per month.

Can you work abroad at BCG or Bain & Co?

You do have a chance to work abroad at Bain, however – during the 6 month period when you have a choice of an externship with another company, an international transfer, or a rotation in Bain’s private equity or non-profit arms. BCG falls somewhere in the middle.

In head to head recruiting, Bain often beats out BCG because of culture but loses to McKinsey based on prestige or brand-name. In terms of staffing, you’ll find that Bain is more analyst heavy than both McKinsey and BCG. On a standard McKinsey or BCG team, there may be only 1 analyst.

What is the difference between a BCG and a bainee?

The firm has more of a local staffing model like Bain, but also enjoys an established global reach, which means BCGers are still more likely than Bainees to travel internationally so the firm can keep utilization above 75\%. At the end of the day, you will be on the road every week with all 3 firms.

How do MBB firms differ when it comes to culture?

More than anything else, you’re going to see big differences among the MBB firms when it comes to culture. Oftentimes, when candidates have more than 1 MBB offer to consider, they make their final choice based on which firm’s culture resonates best with their personality and background.
