Do blu-ray players have two lasers?

A Blu-ray player has two laser assemblies: A “blue laser” for reading the microscopic “pits” that store data from Blu-ray discs. A “red laser” for reading the slightly larger pits that store data from DVDs and CDs.

Why does Blu-Ray come with 2 discs?

Blu-Ray predates the PS3, but Sony knew what they were doing when they decided to switch to Blu-Ray following the DVDs (and occasionally CDs) that the PS2 used. Games were getting bigger and it was time to move away from games that required two disks.

What is special about Blu-Ray?

How are Blu-ray discs read?

Unlike current DVDs, which use a red laser to read and write data, Blu-ray uses a blue laser. A blue laser has shorter wavelengths (405 nanometers) than a red laser (650 nanometers). The smaller beam focuses more precisely, enabling it to read information recorded in pits that are only 0.15 microns long.

Do blu ray players use blue lasers?

While a DVD uses a 650 nm red laser, Blu-ray Disc uses a 405 nm “blue” laser diode. Although the laser is called “blue”, its color is actually in the violet range.

Will a scratched Blu Ray play?

From what I hear minor scratches can cause serious damage to a Blu Rays playability. I have the entire Clone Wars on blu-ray and I just checked the discs today and many had small scratches on the side of the disk. Nothing major or deep, but noticeable.

Can a blue laser read a DVD?

Now Blu-ray engineers have cleared the two huge technical hurdles: increasing light-focusing capacity (for higher resolution) and decreasing laser wavelength (the blue-violet beam can read a finer track packed onto the standard-size disc). That’s about six times longer than other recordable DVD discs.
