Do firefighters carry scuba gear?

Each day, firefighters use specific gear designed to keep them safe in hazardous environments. In many ways, the gear carried by firefighters is very similar to scuba gear carried by public safety divers and that gear often serves many of the same purposes.

Why are scuba divers taught to not hold their breath?

One of the first rules of safe diving is to never hold your breath, instead keeping you airways open as much as possible by breathing normally. If you hold your breath while ascending to the surface, your lungs and the air within them expand as the water pressure weakens.

Why don t scuba divers fill their tanks with pure oxygen?

Diving with pure oxygen deeper than 20 feet can cause a person to absorb more oxygen than his system can safely handle, leading to central nervous system (CNS) oxygen toxicity. CNS oxygen toxicity causes a diver to go into convulsions (among other things).

Why do firefighters not explode oxygen tanks?

Firefighters breathe from air tanks called SCBA’s (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). These air tanks don’t explode when exposed to heat because they are filled with compressed air, not oxygen. The air tanks have a burst disk to prevent rupture from the increased pressure due to heat.

Are firefighters scuba divers?

Today, in addition to the divers, firefighter crews operate the harbor-based fleet which includes five fireboats. They fight boat fires, and divers continue to fight wharf fires from below the water. They conduct water rescues, assist sinking boats, and perform breakwater rescues.

What happens if you run out of air while scuba diving?

Excess air will flow out of the lungs as long as the airway is kept open through inhaling or exhaling. Continuing to breathe in and out is the best possible way to surface, as it is closest to a normal ascent. Ideally, you do not want your lungs to approach being either full or empty.

Why do deep sea divers use helium?

The main reason for adding helium to the breathing mix is to reduce the proportions of nitrogen and oxygen below those of air, to allow the gas mix to be breathed safely on deep dives. Helium has very little narcotic effect. A lower proportion of oxygen reduces the risk of oxygen toxicity on deep dives.

Is scuba diving bad for your lungs?

The most dangerous medical problems are barotrauma to the lungs and decompression sickness, also called “the bends.” In some divers, these lung injuries can be bad enough to cause lung collapse (pneumothorax). The injuries may also allow free air bubbles to escape into the blood stream.
