Do I need a mouth guard for Jiu Jitsu?

Some BJJ schools will ask you to wear a mouthguard, however, you do not need a mouthguard in all BJJ schools. In general, many BJJ students choose to wear a mouthguard anyway to protect their teeth. This is because BJJ is a full-contact sport and can carry some risk of injury.

Do you need a gum shield for BJJ?

Jiu-Jitsu is grappling art so strikes to the jaw don’t occur on a regular basis. Accidents do happen and a mouth guard can help prevent injury to the teeth, lips, and gums. In addition, it can help absorb some of the impact when hit with an open jaw.
