You don’t need to read it first. And then I would also recommend the short sorties. I would probably read them after the books, but they happen in-between. And you have to keep in mind that there will be a new trilogy that will take place before all of this.
Are the Thrawn books any good?
This was honestly the best novel in the new canon – hands down. Thrawn reads incredibly well, with a true Sherlock Holmes feel to it. Zahn proves why he should always be the go to in the Star Wars Universe. I won’t spoil this for you, but if there is a have to read in the new canon this is it!
