Do whales suffer from decompression?

Whales, seals and dolphins all posses similar adaptations that prevent them from suffering decompression sickness as they go about their daily activities, but despite these, marine mammals have been seen with symptoms that could indicate decompression sickness.

Do fish suffer from the bends?

These fish die even though they are handled gently and released quickly. The reason: a condition called barotrauma, which divers know as “the bends.” The problem occurs in fish that have a swim bladder, an internal balloon that helps them control their buoyancy.

How do dolphins not get the bends?

When dolphins dive deep below the water’s surface, they avoid succumbing to decompression sickness, or “the bends,” likely because the massive sea creatures have collapsible lungs, a new study finds. These lungs allow dolphins to inhale and exhale two to three times quicker than humans.

Why do marine mammals not get the bends?

When air-breathing mammals dive to high-pressure depths, their lungs compress. Marine mammals’ chest structure allows their lungs to compress. Scientists have assumed that this passive compression was marine mammals’ main adaptation to avoid taking up excessive nitrogen at depth and getting the bends.
