Do you aim above or below a fish?

You always want to aim below the fish because the refraction of light makes the fish appear closer to the surface than they are. The distance that you aim depends on how far away you are from the fish, and how deep the fish is in the water.

Why does a spear fisherman aim at a fishtail?

Why didn’t the spear hit the fish?

This is all to do with the refraction of light and real and apparent depth. If the fisherman aims at the center of the fish the spear will miss! This makes the fish appear to be nearer to the surface and further away because your eye assumes light travels in a straight line.

How far below the water should you aim when spear fishing?

So, for every foot of depth between the fish and the water’s surface, you can aim 6 inches below your target, assuming you’re shooting or spearing from approximately a 45-degree angle. This will take practice, but it’s important to keep in mind in case you ever need to spearfish or bowfish in a survival situation.

What is spearfishing and how do you do it?

Spearfishing generally refers to using some sort of spear gun after diving in and while swimming underwater. In this case there is no refraction plane to look through so aiming is straightforward.
