Do you get paid by rank or job in the Navy?

All members of the military, regardless of which branch you serve in, are paid according to their rank, time in service, location of duty station, family members and job specialty. The lowest-ranking enlisted military service member, whether a U.S. Army Private or a U.S. Navy Seaman Recruit, has a pay grade of E-1.

Is military pay based on rank?

A member’s grade (usually the same as rank) and years of service determines the amount of basic pay received.

How is military pay determined?

The amount of pay may vary by the member’s rank, time in the military, location duty assignment, and by some special skills the member may have. Pay will be largely based on rank, which goes from E-1 to E-9 for enlisted members, O-1 to O-10 for commissioned officers and W-1 to W-5 for warrant officers.
