Do you get to choose your weapon in the military?

Essentially none. Every single item in your unit’s armory is accounted for by serial number and hand signature. If you don’t need it, it’s under lock and key. It gets assigned out to you based on the MTOE — basically a document that says who is in what position in the unit, and is assigned to what weapon system.

Do special forces get to customize their weapons?

US Special Operations Command’s standard-issued rifle is the M4A1 with the SOPMOD II upgrade, which adds a variety of accessories to the rifle, such as rails, lasers, scopes, magnifiers, and grips. Many special operators, however, are free to customize their rifle as they see fit.

Can you buy your own gear in the military?

In general, members of the armed forces aren’t required to buy any tactical equipment. They may have to lay out some cash for certain ceremonial duties. After a promotion, for example, you might have to buy a new insignia and sew it onto your uniform.

Do military members get to keep their guns?

No, they do not. Their issued weapons are government property and remain so when they leave the services. If they bought weapons, they could keep those.

More commonly, the department issues a gun that probationary officers carry until they are off probation, then they can switch to any personal weapon they like from a list approved by their department. If I had to guess, I’d say that most U.S. police officers carry personally-owned weapons on duty.

As the largest police department in Texas, Houston PD allows its officers to carry one of an array of.40-caliber handguns. Officers are required to purchase their weapon and can carry the S&W M&P40 the Glock 22, G22C, G23 or G23C; the Springfield Armory XD-40 (pictured); or the Sig Sauer P226 or P229, in either DA/SA or DAK versions.
