Do you need both ovaries to get pregnant?

Getting pregnant with one ovary is not only possible but usually no more difficult than with two ovaries. More important is whether the fallopian tube is intact. A fallopian tube is a small tube that connects the ovary to the uterine cavity.

What happens if a woman loses both ovaries?

If you haven’t undergone menopause, you will experience menopause if both ovaries are removed. This deprives the body of the hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, produced in the ovaries, leading to complications such as: Menopause signs and symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Does having an ovary removed affect fertility?

Surgery almost invariably damages some healthy eggs, and complications can (rarely, but sometimes) mean doctors need to remove an entire ovary. Both situations result in a lower egg count, which is one factor in fertility.

Can you get pregnant after bilateral oophorectomy?

If only one ovary is removed and not your uterus, you will continue to be fertile and have menstrual periods. However, you may experience an earlier menopause. If both ovaries are removed, you will experience surgical menopause.

Can you still carry a baby after oophorectomy?

It will depend on your situation. If the doctor removes only one ovary, the remaining ovary will probably still produce estrogen. That means you’ll still have a menstrual cycle and be able to get pregnant. If they remove both ovaries, you may need a treatment like in vitro fertilization to get pregnant.

Can you have a baby after an oophorectomy?

You will not be able to become pregnant after having this surgery. And your risk for ovarian cancer will drop to nearly zero. Your breast cancer risk will also be lower.

Only one ovulation can happen per cycle. You can, however, ovulate two (or more) eggs at the same time. When this happens, there is the potential to conceive fraternal (non-identical) twins if both eggs are fertilized. But having two separate eggs released at different times within the same cycle doesn’t happen.
