Does CBT really work for OCD?

Whilst we are always open to other therapies, for the majority, the evidence shows CBT is the treatment of choice for OCD. Research has shown that 75\% of people with OCD are significantly helped by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with some local IAPT services reporting recovery rates of up to 80\%.

What happens when CBT doesn’t work?

Try something “therapeutic” instead of therapy. It may be weird to hear a therapist say this, but sometimes people are actually helped by things besides therapy. Similarly, sometimes therapy alone is not enough. Supplementing or replacing therapy with other meaningful activities can be very helpful.

How long does CBT take OCD?

The typical course of therapy, however, usually requires six months to one year—half a dozen to a dozen consecutive weekly meetings, then about three months of meeting every two weeks, then monthly meetings thereafter.

When is CBT not recommended?

Due to the structured nature of CBT, it may not be suitable for people with more complex mental health needs or learning difficulties. As CBT can involve confronting your emotions and anxieties, you may experience initial periods where you are more anxious or emotionally uncomfortable.

What do you do when counseling doesn’t work?

If therapy isn’t working, the first person you should talk to is your therapist. She may opt to change her approach to treatment, pursue more “homework” options for you, or even refer you to another therapist.

Most patients who undergo intensive treatment using CBT methods for OCD start noticing improvement within weeks. As with most diagnoses treated through CBT, the client is required to do work outside of the therapy session to get the most benefit.

What if CBT doesn’t work?

Remember, there is strong research supporting CBT to help a wide variety of individuals with a wide variety of symptoms. It is a reasonable place to start for many people entering therapy, but it is not a panacea. If CBT hasn’t helped you, or hasn’t helped enough, you have options. I found cbt to be actively harmful.
