Why would you ping a DNS server?

If name resolutions are failing on your local network, try pinging some of the servers on your network. Start out by pinging the server’s IP address. This will confirm that connectivity to the server is working. Without a Host (A) record, the DNS server will be unable to resolve the host’s name.

How does network ping work?

Ping works by sending an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request to a specified interface on the network and waiting for a reply.
