Does it matter if a diamond is GIA certified?

“GIA certified diamond” is a misnomer. GIA doesn’t certify diamonds – it grades them. The terms “GIA certified” and “GIA cert” are commonly used in the jewelry industry to refer to diamonds that have undergone GIA’s rigorous grading process and to the reports that accompany them.

Are GIA reports accurate?

First of All, What is a Diamond Certificate? As a consumer, you should only buy diamonds that are graded by GIA or AGS as they are the most accurate and consistent labs in the entire world.

Does GIA report date matter?

Often, a purchaser of GIA Certified loose diamonds will not notice that the certificate is dated. However, when they do, they often make the assumption that newer is better, and that an older date is an indication of a “used” diamond.

Is Tiffany better than GIA?

It is widely accepted that Tiffany & Co. grade at least as good as GIA. In fact is has been stipulated that if a diamond is on the border of a colour grade, ie an F-G colour, Tiffany & Co. will be slightly stricter than GIA.

What does GIA certified mean?

GIA operates the Gem Trade Laboratory, which is GIA’s sole diamond-grading authority. When a diamond is “GIA certified,” it means it has been graded for the “4 Cs” by GIA gemologists, and a grading report from the Gem Trade Laboratory (GIA Diamond Grading Report or GIA Diamond Dossier) should accompany any GIA-certified diamond.

  • How long for GIA certificate?

    Among the different gemological laboratories, the GIA is considered to be the authority in diamond certification. The GIA takes about 3 weeks to issue a diamond report and also assigns a unique ID number to the graded stone.

    Is EGL certification as good as GIA or AGS?

    From a standpoint of accuracy and consistency, the consensus of the experts is that EGL certification is not as reliable as diamond certification done by AGS or GIA. As a result, diamonds marketed with EGL reports are significantly discounted relative to diamonds with reports from AGS Laboratories (AGSL) and GIA.
