Does the USMC use the Stryker?

The Marine Corps is looking to plus up the firepower aboard its new amphibious combat vehicle. The MCT-30 remote turret boasting the heavier XM813 30mm cannon is currently fielded on a Stryker variant known as the Infantry Carrier Vehicle – Dragoon.

The Stryker interim armored vehicle (IAV) is a 19-ton, eight-wheeled armored vehicle that provides the Army a family of ten different vehicles on a common chassis. The Stryker comprises two variants – the Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV) and the Mobile Gun System (MGS).

The LAV-25 Light Armored Vehicle combines speed, maneuverability and firepower to perform a variety of functions for the U.S. Marine Corps, including security, command and control, reconnaissance and assault. The LAV-AD is in service with the US Marine Corps (USMC). The last of 17 systems was delivered in January 1999. The mission of the USMC LAV-AD is to provide air defence for the light armored vehicle battalion, with a secondary role to defend against ground threats.

What is the difference between the Stryker and the LAV-25?

Both have the same DNA. The Strykers are newer, better armored, more integrated communications and electronics, but are not amphibious. They can ford rivers, but can not “swim”. The Strykers can carry heavier firepower than the older LAV-25, which is pretty much at the limits of its upgradability.

How many LAV-25 are in the Marine Corps?

The table of organization and equipment for a USMC light-armored reconnaissance battalion includes 56 LAV-25s, 16 LAV-ATs, 12 LAV-Ls, 8 LAV-Ms, 4 LAV-Rs, 4 LAV-C2s, and an unknown number of LAV-MEWSS vehicles. The LAV platform is planned to remain in service with the Marine Corps until 2035.

What kind of armor does the LAV 25 have?

The LAV-25 is a lightly armored vehicle. The base model is protected by light gauge high hardness steel armor (MIL-A-46100), varying in nominal thickness from 4.71 mm to 9.71 mm.

Did the US Army use LAV-25s in the Gulf War?

The Army did, however, borrow at least a dozen LAV-25s for use by the 82nd Airborne Division, 3-73rd Armor for a scout platoon during the Gulf War. These LAV-25s were returned to the Marine Corps after the conflict.
