How a Senior Advocate is different from other advocates?

Senior Advocate is an advocate who has been designated as such by either the Supreme Court or the High Court. A Senior Advocate cannot file a vakalathnama, appear in the Court without another advocate or advocate-on-record, cannot directly accept an engagement to appear in a case or draft pleadings.

What is the criteria of Senior Advocate?

The Senior Advocate must have had a master’s degree (preferably PhD) in Law from an accredited law school or institution as recognised by the law and at least five years of working experience in a legal corporate environment.

What is the difference between junior and senior counsel?

Junior counsel tend to do most of the paperwork in cases (drafting legal documents) and they represent clients mainly in the lower courts (the District Court and the Circuit Court). Senior counsel are very experienced advocates who represent clients in the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

2) Under Order 4 Rule 7 of Supreme Court Rules 1950, which provides that senior advocate shall not draw pleadings, Affidavit, Advice on evidence, and Statement of cases or do any drafting work of any kind in any court. This restriction does not apply to discuss the same work with the junior Advocate.
