How can I get inspired without copying?

There are a few important parts to this:

  1. Diversify your sources of inspiration. Don’t look at only one example of a style you like.
  2. Immerse yourself in inspiration and sleep on it. Take in the stimuli, and then shut it off.
  3. Create from memory, not from reference.

Is copying a drawing bad?

There is one word of caution though. Don’t make copies exclusively. Copying great art works best in combination with drawing from nature, models, and life. By solely copying someone else’s drawings and paintings, you will run into the same pitfalls as if you were drawing from photos.

When It’s Cheating. When you trace to get praise and admiration for drawing a pretty artwork, it’s cheating. The audience doesn’t really admire your part of the work (drawing the lines), but the part that wasn’t created by you (the arrangement of lines resulting in something pretty).

Do you have to understand the subject to copy a drawing?

You don’t have to understand anything about the subject at all to copy it. Drawing, with or without the assistance of references, requires an understanding of what you are creating. There’s a lot of good advice here. I just want to add one more requirement to the list.

How do I improve my drawing skills?

When you copy things enough you start to remember how to draw them so you don’t have to use the same reference for the same thing everytime, just for things you have not done before. I would recommend practicing drawing something several times from different angles and positions so you understand the form in a completely 3d sense.

Is it possible to draw from imagination?

If you have a good memory, you can even memorize the lines and draw the same object without a reference later, but it still has nothing to do with skills you need for drawing from imagination. Not to mention how many lines there are to remember and how easy it is to forget them! Now try to draw something from imagination.

Does having a good memory make you good at drawing?

However, it makes you only good at copying lines and proportions. If you have a good memory, you can even memorize the lines and draw the same object without a reference later, but it still has nothing to do with skills you need for drawing from imagination.
