How can you tell the difference between a male and a female boa?

Because of the presence of two hemipenes located in the bases of their tails, male boas have longer and wider tails than females do. But female boas reach much larger sizes than males do; male boas average approximately 6 feet in length, while females may exceed 8 feet and can weigh 50 pounds.

How can you tell a male snake from a female?

You may be able to tell what gender your snake is by the shape of their tail. Male snakes have reproductive organs called hemipenes. The hemipenes are tubular-shaped organs that sit inside the snake’s body just below the cloacal opening. As a result, a male snake’s tail is usually thicker and longer than a female’s.

Can you pop a boa?

Generally, popping should only be done by a professional breeder or vet or by an owner who is trained and experienced. This is only safe to do when boa constrictors are very small. With the same hand, place a forefinger under the boa. Roll your thumb tip toward the cloaca, applying a little pressure.

Do female snakes have hemipenes?

Female snakes do not have hemipenes. The hemipenes are located just below the cloacal (vent) opening and down along the tail on either side of the snake’s midline. Since these sex organs are housed inside the male snake, they may not be obvious to you at first. There are visible clues that they are there, though.
