The short, super long answer is… as an Open Water certified diver you are qualified to dive “independently” (with a buddy of course), without a certified professional guiding you, to 18m/60ft. This is why we recommend continuing your scuba education and going on more dives.
Do you need qualifications to dive?
PADI requires you to be at least 10 years old to become a PADI certified Junior Open Water Scuba Diver. Ten and 11 year olds must dive with a certified parent, guardian or PADI Professional to a maximum depth of 12 metres. Twelve to 14 year olds must dive with a certified adult.
Can you dive without PADI?

Is it safe to go scuba diving without certification?
One thing you should not do is take up a casual offer to go diving, unless it’s through a legitimate, instructor-led program for non-certified divers. That said, if you haven’t had the time or the bandwidth to get certified, and still want to swim alongside sea creatures, here are a few safe options.
Is scuba diving self policed?
Scuba diving is a self-policed sport, which means there are no scuba diving police waiting to check your diving certification when you surface from a dive. Scuba diving certification is not like passing a driving test to drive on the road where it would be illegal to drive without a valid driving licence.
Is it safe to do a dive in an aquarium?
Diving in an aquarium is still different to diving in open water. You’re in an enclosed space, where bumping into walls and other objects is a genuine hazard.
Why is it dangerous to go diving alone?
Diving alone is dangerous because in an environment not ordinarily designed for air breathing animals. Scuba diving requires an aqua lung which is our air supply to breathe underwater. Should this equipment fail your buddy will be there with their alternative air source (or octopus) to come to your rescue.
