Most white Southerners reacted to defeat and emancipation with dismay. Many families had suffered the loss of loved ones and the destruction of property. Some thought of leaving the South altogether, or retreated into nostalgia for the Old South and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy.

The most convincing ‘internal’ factor behind southern defeat was the very institution that prompted secession: slavery. Enslaved people fled to join the Union army, depriving the South of labour and strengthening the North by more than 100,000 soldiers. Even so, slavery was not in itself the cause of defeat.

The main advantages that the South held during the civil war were the vast ranks of experienced generals and soldiers, along with the benefit of being able to maintain defensive positions. While the North had far more resources and population, in order to unite the country, President Abraham Lincoln had to take the offensive to defeat the Southern rebellion.

What are the reasons for the Civil War besides slavery?

Although slavery was one of the key issues, the causes for the war run much deeper. Besides slavery, other issues that were causes of the civil war included the differences in moral value, and the different ways the politicians interpret the constitution. First of all, the most obvious cause of the war was slavery.
