How do ATMs detect fake money?

The images of the bills are recorded by the ATM when you make a deposit, just like the images of deposited checks are recorded. When the ATM is serviced and the deposited cash is returned to the bank, the bank will run the cash through their counting machine, which typically checks for counterfeits.
