How do ball bearing knives work?
Ball bearings for pocket knives Because the balls roll in between the blade and the frame, knives with ball bearings will open and close very smoothly. Good to know: each knife is different, and one knife will work better with grease while the other will work better with oil.
What are the ball bearings called that keep the blade on track?
The detent ball is a small ball bearing made from steel or ceramics. In knives with a framelock or linerlock a detent ball will make sure that when closed the knife won’t accidentally open. The ball is pushed into the lockbar, and in the blade you can find a small hole.
How does a pivot bearing work?
Flexural pivots are pivot bearings that allow mechanical components to pivot about a common axis through a limited angle relative to each other. A flexural pivot is generally frictionless because its flexing elastic elements affect the angular motion rather than displacing the contact surface.
What kind of oil do you use for folding knives?
Any household grade lubricating oil will suffice. A particular brand that I use is 3-In-One. It is available at your local hardware stores or home centers. 3-In-One is also good for lubricating folding knives, but before you do so I suggest you read my upcoming section on Folding Knife Lubrication.
What is a pivot washer?
125″ Pivot Thrust Washers. These thrust washers are used with the thrust bearings. The washer provides a hardened surface for the ball bearings to run against.
Do ball bearings increase friction?
Hence ball bearings reduce friction because they roll rather than sliding producing rolling friction.
What is the difference between collar and pivot bearing?
A bearing surface provided at the end of a shaft is known as a pivot and that provided at any place along with the length of the shaft with bearing surface of the revolution is known as collar.
