How do I set totally stubby area in OSPF?

To configure an area as a totally stubby area you’d execute the area # stub no-summary in OSPF router configuration mode on the ABR. Totally NSSA – Is an area that permits LSA’s 1, 2 and 7 while blocking 3 4 and 5. This stub area receives a default route from the ABR using a type 3 LSA.

What is a totally stubby area in OSPF?

A totally stubby area (TSA) is a stub area in which summary link-state advertisement (type 3 LSAs) are not sent. The ABR of a totally stubby area disables origination of summary LSAs into this area, but still accepts summary LSAs from OSPF neighbors and floods them to other neighbors.

What is OSPF not so stubby area?

The OSPFv2 not-so-stubby area (NSSA) enables you to configure OSPFv2 areas that provide the benefits of stub areas, but that also are capable of importing external route information.

What is the purpose of Area 0 in OSPF?

Albeit OSPF is a link state protocol, the way OSPF handles inter-area traffic leaves it prone to routing loops. This is why OSPF must connect back to area 0 – to avoid routing loops.

How do you set up a stubby area?

To configure OSPF stub areas:

  1. On all routing devices in the area, configure an OSPF stub area.
  2. On the ABR, inject a default route into the area.
  3. (Optional) On the ABR, restrict summary LSAs from entering the area.
  4. If you are done configuring the devices, commit the configuration.

What are OSPF areas?

By definition an OSPF area is a collection of networks, not a collection of routers. A backbone network segment is an IP subnet that belongs to the area identified by 0.0. 0.0. Areas that are not physically connected to the backbone are logically connected by a backbone ABR using an OSPF virtual link.

What is a totally stubby area?

A stub area that only allows routes internal to the area and restricts Type 3 LSAs from entering the stub area is often called a totally stubby area. External routes and destinations to other areas are no longer summarized or allowed into a totally stubby area.

What does next hop of 0.0 0.0 mean in the show ip BGP command output?

A. A network in the BGP table with a next hop address of 0.0. 0.0 means that the network is locally originated via redistribution of Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) into BGP, or via a Cisco − BGP: Frequently Asked Questions Page 4 network or aggregate command in the BGP configuration.

What types of LSAs are present in a totally not so stubby area?

Summary

  • Standard areas can contain LSAs of type 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and may contain an ASBR.
  • Stub areas can contain type 1, 2, and 3 LSAs.
  • Totally stubby areas can only contain type 1 and 2 LSAs, and a single type 3 LSA.
  • Not-so-stubby areas implement stub or totally stubby functionality yet contain an ASBR.

Can two area communicate without Area 0?

If an OSPF architecture has only one area, the whole purpose of having an area 0 is meaningless. Only LSAs 1 and 2 are exchanged between OSPF speaking routers. However, an addition of another area will generate type 3 onwards LSAs and the routing table would not be complete without a backbone (0) area.

What is the advantage of areas in OSPF?

The main benefits of using areas in an OSPF network are: the routing tables on the routers are reduced. less time is required to run the SFP algorithm, since routers need to recalculate their link-state database only when there’s a topology change within their own area. routing updates are reduced.

What are the OSPF area types?

There are five types of OSPF areas: Backbone area (area 0), Standard area, Stub area, Totally stubby area, and No so stubby area (NSSA).

How to confirm that the area type is totally stubby area?

Let’s check how we can confirm that the area type is Totally Stubby area: Aedes still showing as a stub area but the Totally Stubby area can be identified on Anopheles. It is showing that it is also a Stub area but there are no-summary LSA which confirms that our area 20 is a Totally Stubby area.

What is Cisco totally stubby area?

Totally Stubby Area is a Cisco proprietary feature which works like a Stub Area but a stricter area type. If Stub Area do not allow certain LSA Types like Type 4 and Type 5 LSAs, Totally Stubby area do not allow it as well plus no Type 3 LSA too. The result is even smaller routing table.

What is the difference between stub area and stub area?

Stub Area is the area that do not accept the External LSAs (Type 5). Stub Areas accept the summary LSAs Type 3 beside the Default Route from the Backbone Area. They also do not accept Type 4 LSAs.

What are the different area types of OSPF?

Stub Areas, Totally-Stub Areas, Not So Stubby Areas and Totally Not So Stubby Areas are the other area types of OSPF. These area types are prevent some routes to enter the Area routers. We will check all of these one by one. For this article, the below topology will be our reference topology.
