How do ships protect themselves from torpedoes?
The effective anti-torpedo defense depends on early detection of the torpedo. Once the torpedo is launched, sonar tracking from ships and helicopters may manage to spot it in time to destroy it with anti-torpedo torpedoes or by maneuvering the ship away from any visible torpedo track.
Did battleships have sonar?
Most warships in World War II did use sonar, especially the destroyers and destroyer escorts. Anti-submarine patrolling was one of their main jobs. Transport ships and merchant vessels did not have sonar because it was not their job to find submarines.
How much does a modern warship cost?
CBO estimates the cost of the 10 FFG(X) ships would be $12.3 billion in 2020 (inflation-adjusted) dollars, about $1.2 billion per ship, on the basis of its own weight-based cost model.
What is an effective way to attack submarines?
Common weapons for attacking submarines include torpedoes and naval mines, which can both be launched from an array of air, surface, and underwater platforms.
Did WW2 destroyers have sonar?
Destroyer escorts mounted the latest and most up-to-date anti-submarine weapons and detection gear available during World War II, including depth charges, hedgehogs, air and surface search radar, sonar, and a high frequency radio direction finder known as HF/DF.
Was there sonar in WW2?
Although active sonar was used by surface craft in World War II, submarines avoided the use of active sonar due to the potential for revealing their presence and position to enemy forces.

How many torpedoes can a submarine hold?
A submarine will typically carry 12 to 38 torpedoes or missiles shared by between four and eight torpedo tubes. Missile tubes, meanwhile, which are typically mounted vertically on the top of the hull, carry one missile each.
Do merchant ships carry sonar?
No. There is no need for merchant ships to carry sonar. It serves no purpose and will add expenses to the owner. Mostly just as a depth sounder. There is forward looking sonar available to help yachts avoid barely floating stuff, like containers that are awash.
How do AEW aircraft detect missiles launched from submarines?
Their job is to detect the incoming missiles, or the planes or ships carrying them. They might be sub-launched too, but AEW aircraft aren’t really there to detect subs, and that would involve a detour into the world of ASW, so, for sub-launched missiles, we’re just interested in spotting the missiles themselves.
Are there any anti aircraft/missile weapons on a ship?
In addition it is likely that any guns on the ship will have anti aircraft/missile capability. Many western ships have the Phalanx or similar close in defence weapon. For torpedoes, it might have to rely on manoevering and speed in order to make a torpedo run out of fuel and possibly also Torpedo decoys.
Are there any stealth ships in Star Wars?
There is stealth, after a fashion: a system called PRAIRIE (you might have heard it mentioned in The Last Ship) makes the ship sound weird, which can confuse a torpedo’s sonar-based seeker. Then there are decoys of various kinds. They don’t always work, but they’re better than nothing.
